Festival Day at the Captain’s Garden

Discover the secrets of Deal’s community garden where a summery feast of art, poetry and music will take place over the middle of the day. The fun starts at 10 o’clock with a free art workshop for children and their families run by local artist Maya Ramsay from SEAS. The music kicks off at 11 o’clock with a performance of a new piece by Blasio Kavuma given by the DMA Saxophone Saturday group, followed by a host of local musicians playing mellow music including the Scratch Band, the Landmark Choir and more. To end the event, Deal’s very own poetry maestro Phil Welton hosts a poetry open mic session under the beautiful tree at the end of the garden. Bring your deckchairs and picnic rugs and while away the hours – you’re welcome to come for as much or as little of the day as you wish.

Approximate times for the day:

  • 10-11am –  art workshop for children aged 4-11 (children must be accompanied by an adult). No booking is required.
  • 11am-1pm – music from local groups and artists
  • 1-2pm –  a poetry open mic session hosted by Phil Welton under the garden’s iconic tree. Come along and listen to Deal’s talented poets!

Please note: The garden has uneven surfaces. Much of it is wheelchair accessible but if you would like to reserve a disabled parking space, please email Alice at alice.wilkinson@dealmusicandarts.com in advance. There is no public parking but there are spaces nearby.

The open mic spots are now taken but if you would like to be on a reserve list, please contact Alice at alice.wilkinson@dealmusicandarts.com
