A gorgeous ramble over the White Cliffs, this architecture walk from Dover to Deal is led by architect and writer Charles Holland. It includes some of the nine 21st century structures of CHALKUP21 as well as other buildings of interest along the route and will address issues of local history, art and the environment. His new book How to enjoy Architecture – a guide for everyone, is published by Yale University Press.
Meet in front of the Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club, 4-5 Waterloo Crescent, Dover CT16 1LA, by 10.20am.
The walk ends at approximately 4pm at Pier Cafe, Deal
Very important information: This walk is approximately 10 miles and will involve around 4.5 hours of walking, together with listening stops and a lunch break. You will need a good level of fitness and be able to manage uneven ground and slopes, and a couple of steep climbs up steps. The first part of the walk between Dover and St Margaret’s which takes around 2 hours has nowhere to fill up water bottles, buy any refreshments or any public toilets. Please wear appropriate clothes for the weather including sturdy footwear, and bring a sunhat and sunscreen and/or a waterproof, sufficient water and any medication needed for insect bite allergies. Bring a packed lunch to eat in St Margaret’s, where you can buy top-up refreshments. If the weather is bad on the day, please check our website for updates although the walk is likely to go ahead unless the weather is set to persistent, heavy rain. You will need to arrange transport from the end of the walk, which will finish at Deal Pier, a ten-minute walk from Deal station. Please be aware that the walk will need to start at the scheduled time and that you need to have purchased your ticket before 9.30am on the day. There will be no tickets on sale at the event.
