In collaboration with the popular East Kent-based Smugglers Festival, here are performances from two exciting world music groups: a celebration of union through music.
Baque Luar, a collective of female and non-binary vocalists and percussionists with Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian roots, bring a mixture of vocal harmonies, powerful percussive grooves, dance and a spectacular array of drums. Meaning ’moonlit beat’, their unique mixture has led to much-admired live performances, including the Jazz Cafe, Southbank Centre, Somerset House and a wide array of festivals and venues across the UK.
Gamelan Lila Cita (‘happiness’), founded by Andy Channing in 1992, is the only group in Britain that regularly performs a wide range of traditional and contemporary Balinese music on a gamelan orchestra of tuned bronze gongs. The group has performed throughout the UK and abroad, including at la Caixa in Barcelona, St James’s Palace, the Royal Opera House, Glastonbury Festival, and even the prestigious Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar.
Together, both groups will create an evening full of joyful music-making.
