This lunchtime concert is inspired by nautical travel and the sea, whose sounds veer from the benign to the stormy. Herman Melville’s epic Moby Dick references the infamous Goodwin Sands, just off the coast of Deal, the site of over 2,000 shipwrecks.
It also gives its name to the second movement of Takemitsu’s Toward the Sea, which appears today in a version for bass recorder and guitar. A portrait of the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the Western world, Cadiz, by Sören Sieg stands alongside works by Jean Françaix and former Walmer resident Althea Talbot-Howard.
